I came across the article on the weekend How to Future Proof Your Brain. I was not looking for it but it feels like it found me

It appeared in The Australian a piece on brain health and dementia. Practical. Grounded. Not alarmist. It mentioned a book called The Stimulated Mind by Dr Tommy Wood, a neuroscientist and performance coach who works with Formula One drivers and elite athletes. I ordered it without giving it much thought.

Then I could not put it down.

Not because it was dramatic. Because it was quietly confronting in a way I had not expected.

I had already lived part of this story. And the book gave me the language for something I had experienced but never fully understood.

Who Dr Tommy Wood Is

It is worth knowing who wrote this before going further.

Dr Tommy Wood is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics and Neuroscience at the University of Washington. He holds a degree in biochemistry from Cambridge, a medical degree from Oxford, and a PhD in physiology and neuroscience from Oslo. His research focuses on brain resilience across the human lifespan, from premature babies to ageing adults. He also works as a performance consultant, including with Formula One teams.

That combination matters. This is not a book written from a laboratory alone. It is written by someone who has worked in the gap between neuroscience and real human performance for years. The result is rare: science that is precise and still deeply practical.

The Central Argument

The premise of The Stimulated Mind is simple.

The brain is not something you protect. It is something you build.

That distinction sounds small. It is not.

Most conversations about cognitive health are built around protection. Risk factors. Prevention strategies. Things that feel slightly removed from daily life. Dr Wood reframes the whole question. The brain responds to the demands placed on it. When those demands are high and varied, it builds capacity. When they are low, it gradually becomes less capable.

This is not a sudden failure. It is a slow drift. And it begins long before any diagnosis.

The brain adapts to the level of demand placed on it. When demand drops, the brain does not stay still. It becomes efficient at doing less.

Dr Wood calls the reserve created through stimulation “headroom” the cognitive buffer we accumulate through years of genuine challenge. It is what allows us to keep functioning well under the pressures of ageing. And it cannot be built later. It is built now, through how we live.

The 3-S Model

The practical framework at the heart of the book is the 3-S Model: Stimulation, Sleep, and Nutrient Supply.

Stimulation means genuine cognitive challenge. Not crosswords as a ritual, but learning new skills, navigating complexity, engaging in demanding social and physical activity. The brain needs to be asked hard questions regularly or it adjusts to easier ones.

Sleep is when the brain consolidates, repairs, and clears the metabolic waste that accumulates through waking hours. Dr Wood treats sleep not as rest but as active maintenance. Without it, stimulation produces far less benefit.

Nutrient Supply is the biological infrastructure what the brain runs on. This includes movement, which increases blood flow and supports neuroplasticity, as much as diet. The brain cannot build what it does not have the materials for.

What makes the model useful is how it reframes the problem. Each of these three pillars is modifiable. None of them requires expensive supplements or specialist interventions. They require deliberate, repeated daily choices. That is the argument. And it is both more hopeful and more demanding than most of what gets written about brain health.

Why It Hit Differently

I read most books like this as a professional exercise. I note the frameworks, test them against what I already know, and extract what is useful.

I did not read this one that way.

My father had dementia. I watched him decline over years not suddenly, but in the way the book describes. Gradually. In patterns.

At first, it was easy to explain away. A forgotten detail. A repeated question at the dinner table. A name that would not come. Small things. Easy to dismiss.

Then the pattern accelerated.

The moment I return to most often happened at a funeral. I found him in the bathroom, alone, reading from a small piece of paper. He had written on it the names of family members and a few words of context next to each one. Who they were. How they were connected. He was studying it before walking back out into the room. When he saw me he did not try to hide it. He looked at me with a frustration I had not seen in him before. Not embarrassment. Frustration. The kind that comes from a mind that knows it is losing its grip and cannot understand why. The names of the people he loved most in the world were escaping him and he was doing the only thing he could think of to hold on.

There were other moments. He would ask me what I did for work three times in the same conversation. Not because he had forgotten he asked. He genuinely could not hold it. Each question was the first one. And each time I answered, I watched him receive it as new information, engage with it briefly, and lose it again. That is a particular kind of grief. Watching someone you love be present and absent at the same time.

That is where it stopped being subtle.

He was still present in flashes. The warmth was still there. The love was there. But the consistency was gone. The man who had been strong and clear and certain became unreachable in his own way. A shell of who he had been still recognisable, still loved, but no longer fully there.

Reading The Stimulated Mind did not change that. But it changed how I understood it.

The decline I watched was not random. It was the result of a system that had been quietly depleting for years before it became visible. And that realisation is the most important thing this book gave me.

What the Book Actually Changes

Lesson 1: Cognitive decline is not inevitable

Dr Wood challenges the assumption that mental decline is simply what happens with age. The research is more complex and more hopeful than that. Up to 70 per cent of dementia cases involve factors that are at least partially modifiable. The brain’s trajectory is shaped by how it is used, fuelled, and rested across decades. That is not a guarantee of anything. But it changes the framing entirely.

Lesson 2: Passive living has a cost that arrives quietly

Modern life is built to reduce friction. We automate, simplify, and outsource thinking wherever we can. That feels like efficiency. Dr Wood argues it functions more like slow withdrawal from the cognitive bank. The brain adapts to what we ask of it. When we stop asking hard things, it adjusts accordingly.

Lesson 3: Stimulation is a daily practice, not a program

This is where the infrastructure argument lands. Not a course. Not a supplement protocol. Not an annual health initiative. Daily cognitive challenge, physical movement, social engagement, and quality sleep built into how life is actually lived. Not bolted on. Designed in.

Lesson 4: The headroom you build now is the capacity you draw on later

This is Dr Wood’s most useful concept. Headroom is not just current brain function. It is the reserve created through years of demand. The more you build, the more you have available when ageing, illness, or stress begin to draw on it. You cannot deposit into this account retrospectively. The time is now.

I did not read The Stimulated Mind as a grief exercise. That is not what it is and reading it that way would have missed the point.

But I read it as someone who knows what the other end of this looks like. And that changes how the science lands.

Dr Wood’s argument is ultimately hopeful. The brain is not fixed. Decline is not written in advance. What we do daily how we challenge ourselves, how we sleep, how we move, how we engage shapes the brain we will have. Not just now. Over decades.

The responsibility is closer than most people want to acknowledge.

But so is the opportunity.

The brain does not protect itself. It builds itself, or it doesn’t. That is the whole argument. And once you see it that way, the question changes from ‘how do I prevent decline?’ to ‘what am I actually building?’

That question is where this series starts.
